Beating imposter syndrome and investing in yourself…introducing Mentoring for Photographers

It took me awhile to own the fact that I was a photographer. I found it hard to actually use the label when someone asked me ‘what do you do?’ and to put it to the world that yes, I’m a photographer. Perhaps I was feeling that old friend imposter syndrome, or perhaps I was just feeling like I needed someone in my corner to give a little bit of guidance.

Well, the good news is, now I’m that person in your corner. I love being a cheerleader for other photographers. I’m here to help you attract your dream clients and turn your business into everything you’ve dreamed it would be.

I have been a photographer now for over a decade, running and growing my business to create the ideal lifestyle that I have been envisioning for years.

In that time, I have invested in myself. Yes, invested in, not just spent money on. It’s more than just spending money when you purchase an online course or attend a workshop. It is a vital investment into your own self development and your business skills to help you grow, save time, charge more for your experience and expertise and become a well-known, in-demand photographer with confidence.

In order to do this, I needed to shift my mindset and workout what my five and ten year goals were. To look further ahead to then give me a path I could start to follow each day and slowly get there over time. Each course I took or workshop I attended I learnt at least one nugget of gold - usually more - that I could use within my business. Sometimes I would take on the advice and tweak it slightly to suit my personality or my style of working.

Even networking and meeting new people has also been a great asset to my self-development, and I have also learnt to reach out and ask questions of photographers who I admire and who have thousands and thousands of followers (they are celebrities in my eyes!). I’ve learnt that if you don’t ask, then the answer is always ‘no’ and often people are super happy to help! I have not only grown as a photographer in business but also as a person.

I’ve loved the tips I’ve learned about programs to save me time and systems for client management to make my business more efficient – anything that can save me time doing back-end tasks so I can spend more time on income-generating tasks has been great for my business. I love circulating money (purchasing a course) and watching it come back tenfold in the form of the knowledge I learn which enables me to save time and increase my income.

There’s been something inside me that I’ve been bursting to get out. An itch I’ve needed to scratch. I’ve always loved being a cheerleader for other photographers. I love mentoring them and I love sharing what I’ve learned over ten years in business. Knowledge that has been hard earned; the things that make me think, ‘oh wow, if only I’d known that sooner.’

So I’ve been working on a way to share those lessons far and wide. I’m taking what I’ve learned as a mentor and I’m going live with Mentoring for Photographers, three pretty fabulous (or at least I think so!) online courses designed to help photographers level up and build their best business. Mentoring for Photographers is not just about f-stops and shutter speeds, it’s about finding a place of balance in your business where you can do the work you love and live the life you want – not spend every weekend chained to your camera or your computer while editing.

These three courses are designed to help lifestyle photographers who are starting out or who are a few years into their business gain the knowledge to avoid burnout and attract their ideal clients, so they can work less and earn more. They draw on everything I’ve taught as a mentor to professional photographers over the years, and the hard-won lessons I’ve learned myself. The courses are for anyone who is feeling a little stuck or overwhelmed in their photography biz - if this sounds like you, I’d love to hear from you! Celebrate Light and Unveil the Beauty are Live now. Behind the scenes, I’m putting the finishing touches on my last course Uncover your Inner Artist.

In those early days, before I started investing in myself I would often get those thoughts: ‘I’m not good enough,’ ‘why am I doing this,’ ‘I’m so scared,’ ‘why on earth are these people hiring me when there are way better photographers out there?’ Some days I still feel that way, but after over 10 years in business I’ve learned to shift my mindset and not let those thoughts hold me back. I know that I’m great at what I do and I have built a successful business that I love. I’ve learned that ‘I’m not good enough,’ is not a truth, it’s just a voice in my head. I’ve learned to believe all of the nice comments and beautiful words I’ve received from clients who ADORE my work, and to take them as proof that I am good enough and I can do this.

Are you a photographer? Do those thoughts sound familiar to you? Here’s the key: do not compare yourself to others who have been in the industry for years. Compare yourself to who you were six months ago, one year ago. Look back and see how far you have come. Be better than the person you were yesterday.

Not sure how to do this? Let me teach you. Let me show you how to shift your mindset to push through the barriers and the ‘I’m not good enough-s’ so that your business can thrive. Shifting your mindset is the number one thing you can do to help your business bloom and it’s just one of the modules in my new online mentoring course Uncover your inner artist - I’ll teach you how to back yourself and ditch the imposter syndrome for good!

Why I’m working less and how you can too. I call it my epiphany moment. The moment I knew I needed to change.

As I transitioned out of wedding photography after six years, I realised I’d spent those years prioritising work over everything else in my life: things like spending quality time with my family and friends, doing Pilates and playing netball and tennis; over things like being part of our farm business, volunteering and having an actual weekend once in a while.

I realised I didn’t want that anymore; not for me, and not for my family. I made conscious changes and reduced the number of shoots I do each year. I’ve learned that it’s okay to say no to work that doesn’t align with me. Now I only do the work that I love. I’m so much happier and I’ve never enjoyed my photography more. But I know many other photographers who still feel stuck. Stuck in overwhelm, feeling chained to the camera and the Lightroom editing. Feeling like they can’t say no to work, even when it doesn’t feel great and impacts the time, they have for the work that they truly love.

Are you a photographer who is ready for your epiphany moment? Would you like to work less and earn more and come away from a shoot feeling like your heart is singing? If the answer is yes, well, at the risk of sounding like a 90s boy band, I’ve got a little something for you. I know exactly how you feel because I’ve been there, and I’d like to teach you what I now know. Introducing Mentoring for Photographers. Three big, bold, beautiful online courses that will help you build your best business and help you to L-O-V-E what you do.
